Global Design Awards: Spotlight on Wayfinding
Wayfinding is a key element of Experiential Design and is essential in public spaces. Beyond guiding efficiently, its well-crafted design and aesthetics significantly enhance the identity and qualitative experience of these environments. Wayfinding has evolved into a highly integrated, user-focused and increasingly technology-driven discipline with huge social and economic implications for cities, hospitals and other public spaces.
As the deadline for the 2024 Global Design Awards (GDA) quickly approaches, we want to take a moment to highlight a few of the incredible projects that received a 2023 Global Design Award in the Wayfinding category.
Winning wayfinding projects include creative reinventions of modern community hubs, such as the Serviceplan Group’s new House of Communication in Munich (winner of the 2023 Wayfinding Honor Award), the Summit Building of the Seattle Convention Center, and a new wayfinding and environmental graphic design system for Contentful in Berlin. Other recent bespoke workplace wayfinding projects include a new signage system for the Sydney Headquarters of Australia’s Commonwealth Bank, and a new signage system for the Pinterest Headquarters in Toronto.
Outside the workplace, wayfinding projects also include educational campus projects like the 2023 Wayfinding Honor Award winner “Beyond Wayfinding” at the University of Hawai’i. And the new visual identity for LUMA Arles highlights creative ways to foster more accessibility in exhibition spaces.
