The New York Times Building Facade

Making Headlines

At the Renzo Piano-designed New York Times Building, Pentagram melds signage, architecture, and brand identity for Times Squares’ founding tenant.

When Pentagram was brought on to conceive the façade identity for The New York Times Building, it was obvious that signage should be integrated with the building’s innovative brise soleil, a curtain wall of white ceramic rods designed to control light and heat intake.

Pentagram (New York), working with the New York City Department of Transportation, has created a new, simplified design for the city’s street parking signage that is more easily understood and may result in fewer parking tickets for New Yorkers.

Eddie Opara and his team kicked off the year in color with the new Pantone 2013 Calendar, which recontextualizes the familiar PMS chips into colorful “digitized” images for each month.

Designed by Eddie Opara and team, the series includes the films The Rothko Chapel (1972) and Max Ernst Hanging (1973), directed or co-directed by Francois de Menil, son of the museum’s founders, Dominique and John de Menil.

Pentagram (New York), working with the Aldo Group, has created a pop-up shop for the launch of Truth or Dare, the new shoe collection from music superstar Madonna. Installed at Selfridges London, the store design captures the line’s unique mix of pop and luxury in a stage-like display that features shoes in gilded cages. “Cages keep beautiful things in and dangerous things contained,” says Daniel Weil of Pentagram, who created the shop.

Pentagram (London) Partners Harry Pearce and Naresh Ramchandani collaborated with the artists Ackroyd & Harvey on an installation of rings suspended in trees at London’s Olympic Park at Stratford. Elegant and quietly powerful, the 10 rings––each 15 meters in diameter and forged of phosphored bronze and stainless steel––tell the story of the Olympic site over the past few centuries and will remain in place after the Games.

Harry Ransom Center

Buried Treasure

Austin's Harry Ransom Center uses environmental graphics to unveil its mission and collections.

The Harry Ransom Humanities Research Center, the University of Texas at Austin’s renowned literary archive, is home to some of the world’s most valuable cultural treasures. Its collections include one of only 48 copies of the Gutenberg Bible, a rare first edition of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, and one of Jack Kerouac’s spiral-bound journals for On the Road.

Pentagram - Air Transport Association

Pentagram (New York) Partners Michael Gericke and Michael Bierut developed a new name, mission statement, and identity for the Air Transport Association, the trade organization of the principal U.S. airlines. Rebranded as Airlines for America (or “A4A”), with the tagline “We Connect the World,” the association is represented by a symbol of five planes coming together to form a star, a visual metaphor for a group of airlines working in concert for their country.
