Doc Johnson Exhibit

Merit Award
Doc Johnson Exhibit, Mauk Design

Doc Johnson has become the leader in their field by improving the level of product design, packaging, and the image of sexual toys. They pioneered the use of modern colors and clear shell packaging, so the challenge was to convey the client in a way that separated them from the sleaze so often seen in the industry.

Pacific Design Center

Merit Award
Pacific Design Center, Selbert Perkins Design Collaborative

Exterior sculptures and a comprehensive interior and exterior wayfinding system were designed to enhance the famous Pacific Design Center complex, Los Angeles' premier designer showcase center. Twenty-five-foot tall, stainless steel sculptures – a lamp and a chair – symbolize the nature of the home furnishings design industry and dramatically reinforce the design center's landmark status. In addition, a clean, modern building identity and wayfinding system was created to streamline pedestrian and vehicular circulation around and within the building.

Farmer's Daughter Hotel

Merit Award, Lot with a Little
Farmer's Daughter Hotel, Romero Thorsen Design

The Farmer's Daughter Hotel is located in Los Angeles across the street from the CBS Studios and The Grove Shopping Center. The hotel was in desperate need of renovation both graphic and architectural. However, the budget was extremely limited.

Through the creation of a strong image/logo and the use of low-tech materials like corten steel, recycled barn wood, and paint, the hotel transforms into a bold expressive canvas that commands attention from its urban counterparts.

Guadalupe Wedding Chapel

Jury Award
Guadalupe Wedding Chapel, Marie & Julliano Morchon, Romero Thorsen Design

The Guadalupe Wedding Chapel is located within the historic district of Downtown Los Angeles, California. The core market demographic is 90% Latin. This second-generation, family-owned business has come to fruition through the creation of a brand image embracing the elements of romance and emotion found in classic architecture, warm interiors, and decorative finishes. Beyond the threshold of the entry lobby lay five individually styled micro-chapels which cater to hundreds of families and couples each week.

Team America

Jury Award
Team America, Paramount Pictures, Rockwell Group

Matt Stone and Trey Parker, the wits who created South Park, tapped Rockwell Group to collaborate on the art direction for their new film, Team America. Rockwell Group led the production team in the creation of the film's unique and unexpected visual language. Simplified views of the cities and settings reflect the myopic viewpoint that Team America has as the World Police force.

A Sign of Democracy

Jury Award
A Sign of Democracy, National Center for the Preservation of Democracy, C&G Partners

This classic, dynamic flap sign was designed and commissioned to display inspirational quotes, poems, questions, and statements about democracy rather than train timetables. Unlike normal flap signs, this one has no labels or markings on it other than the letters that appear when the flaps move. When it is blank, it is mute.

Universal Studios AMC Cinema Graphics

Merit Award
Universal Studios AMC Cinema Graphics, Universal Studios Hollywood, Sussman/Prejza & Company

The renovation of the AMC Cinema at Universal City Walk has raised the bar for movie-going experiences in Los Angeles. After large architectural gestures proved to be unfeasible, the design team was brought on to make a bold graphic statement within the confines of the existing structure and a limited budget. The first task was to create the “big idea” that the targeted demographic would respond to. Since the majority of City Walk movie-goers are 18 to 25 years old, the design team created a visual statement that would appeal to this age group.
