Interactive Architecture

In the age of knowledge, architecture is the storyteller.

The year was 1969. In what he called an “Unwarranted Apology” for the discipline, architectural theorist Reyner Banham argued that while technological advances have often dictated innovation, architecture has often been late to adapt. His revelation, so obvious today by 21st century standards, was that mechanical engineering and architectural design cannot be separated.

3M - Introduces 3M Envision™ Translucent Films

3M (St. Paul, Minn.) introduced 3M Envision™ Translucent Films and 3M Envision™ Diffuser Films, the first graphic films optimized for use with LEDs that let graphics manufacturers achieve maximum sign face brightness while requiring fewer light sources. Using these films, shops can achieve the same level of brightness with fewer LEDs, reducing material and maintenance costs while providing the look those customers expect.

The demonstrations will showcase a variety of the film 1080’s 34 distinct combinations of colors and finishes.

David Jones Department Store

Honor Award
David Jones Department Store, Cato Design

These temporary, celebratory graphics painted the "face" of one of Sydney's most famous landmarks, the David Jones Department Store. Always considered friendly and personal, the store is famous for serving "the women of Sydney." Giant photos of 134 Sydney women, including the store's eldest customer, 101-year-old Edith Whitlock, covered every window. The project included both color and black and white photos, which ranged in size, some taking up only one window, some covering three or four stories.

Merit Award
Kansas City Downtown Library Book Bindings, Kansas City Public Library, JE Dunn Construction, Dimensional Innovations

These well-known books on the parking garage have become some of the most recognizable and widely discussed additions to Kansas City's redeveloping core. The people of Kansas City were asked to help pick the titles of the books in order to truly represent their city. When first asked to design this project, Dimensional Innovations was asked to create a small graphic panel on the center of the book spines. When the vision grew to giant books, the challenge was to reproduce the books in a realistic way and within a set budget.
