From public space to transformative architecture, the 2021 SEGD Conference Experience tours will showcase the offerings that make Philadelphia an eclectic city for design thinking, architectural artistry and innovation!

SEGD’s tours have become a signature part of our annual gathering, giving you a chance to get out of the conference room and actually see the city! Your only problem: there are so many great tours, it’s hard to choose just one! All tours have size limitations and are available on a first-come, first-serve basis, so please register early. Prefer to stay onsite for more sessions? Check out the agenda for Thursday afternoon.

All tours will run in the afternoon on Thursday, November 4 (specific times listed below). Some require walking and/or the use of public transportation. Tours are available on a first-come, first-served basis—so don’t wait to register!

Mural Arts Philadelphia – 1:30pm ET | Sponsored by Urban Sign

Grab your walking shoes and get to know the stunning collection of Mural Arts on this tour. Weave through the diverse neighborhoods of Philadelphia and take in the iconic imagery that makes Philly the Mural Capital of the World, and learn about Philly’s beautiful visual history from professional tour guides. 

Barnes Foundation – 1:00pm ET

The Barnes holds one of the finest collections of impressionist, post-impressionist, and early modernist art, with 181 Renoirs, 69 Cézannes, 59 Matisses, 46 Picassos, and 7 Van Goghs on view. The docent(s) will discuss the history of the Foundation and how Dr. Barnes started collecting art; the ensembles: how Dr. Barnes arranged his artwork and how that is unique; guide you through key artists and works throughout the galleries.

Designing MotherhoodPhiladelphia Center for Architecture & Mutter Museum – 1:00pm ET

Visit the highly acclaimed recent exhibition titled Designing Motherhood. Which explores the systems and tools that focus around reproduction and how reproduction has larger implications in society, economics, and politics.

See Philadelphia sites on two wheels with your friends and colleagues. Take in the sites and raise your heart rate at the same time. Enjoy this custom experience created for SEGD that highlights the history, murals and architecture of our host city, plus includes one stop at a local brewery!

Philadelphia Museum of Art – 1:30pm ET

Visit the new renovation and interior expansion (designed by Frank Gehry architect, EGD by Paula Scher, FSEGD of Pentagram and fabricated by DCL), of the Philadelphia Museum of Art’s landmark 1928 building. Completed in May 2021, the project opened up the heart of the building, created 20,000 sf of new galleries, and re-opened a grand 640-foot long corridor for the first time in 50 years.

Eastern State Penitentiary – 1:30pm ET Sponsored by SignAgent

Eastern State Penitentiary was once the most famous and expensive prison in the world, but stands today in ruin, a haunting world of crumbling cell blocks and empty guard towers.  Join one of our engaging educators for a tour that highlights Eastern State’s 142-year history, revolutionary and influential architecture, and stories of people who lived and worked in the building while setting the stage for conversations about criminal justice reform today. Then meet with Sean Kelly, Senior Vice President, Director of Interpretation for a behind the scenes look at our exhibit process.

Crayola Exhibit at the Franklin Institute – 1:30pm ET

Join Crayola and the Franklin Institute as they premiere the IDEA works exhibition. Meet the minds and talents behind this new exhibition. Through this immersive and interactive experience visitors will explore the process of creativity and define their personal style.

Wonderspaces – 1:00pm ET

Be immersed in amazing art installations at Wonderspaces. Located in the Fashion District of Philadelphia this new space allows for visitors to explore art like never before.
