The 2023 SEGD Global Design Awards: Honoring Excellence in Experience Design
WASHINGTON, DC (January 18, 2023) – The 2023 SEGD Global Design Awards, the premier international awards program for experience design in the built environment, has officially opened for entries.
For over 30 years, the SEGD Global Design Awards have set the standard for excellence in experiential design, recognizing work that connects people to place by providing direction, content-rich and emotionally-compelling experiences in public spaces since 1987. These awards are the most prestigious and recognized in the industry, serving as benchmarks for companies in search of the best EXD firms in the world.
“The SEGD Global Design Awards are the Academy Awards of the experience design profession,” says Cybelle Jones, CEO of SEGD. “They drive hundreds of thousands of visitors to our website annually and are widely recognized as the ultimate accolade in the industry.”
The multidisciplinary jury of nine highly respected international practitioners will evaluate submissions based on criteria such as connecting people to place, creating a memorable user experience, and solving the client’s objective or design challenge. This year’s jurors include:
- Genell Hoeschstetter, Senior Creative Director, Meow Wolf, 2023 SEGD Board Member, 2023 SEGD Global Design Awards Jury Chair
- Robin Abad Ocubillo, Director, San Francisco Shared Spaces
- Inguna Elere, Co-founder & Lead Designer, Design Studio H2E
- Lynn Kiang, Co-founder & Partner, Dome Collective
- Joel Krieger, Head of Design, Magic Leap
- Amy Lukas, Partner, Infinite Scale
- Kyle Richter, Principal, RSM Design
- Ana Tobin, Assistant Professor of Graphic Design, George Mason University
- Matt Usi, Technical Program Manager, Universal Creative
The awards feature seven categories, reflecting the core practice areas of experiential design: Branded Environments, Digital Experiences, Exhibition, Placemaking, Public Installation, Strategy/Research/Planning, and Wayfinding. Honor and Merit awards will be given in each category. A Best of Show award is chosen from among the Honor awards, and a Sylvia Harris award is selected from all submissions for a project which exemplifies design for the public good in honor of the legacy of Sylvia Harris, founder of Citizen Research & Design.
Past winning projects have ranged from design research initiatives to media-rich interactive installations, complex wayfinding systems, retail and interior design, museum exhibitions, branded environments, architectural signage, and contemplative public art.

Winning designers, firms, and fabricators enjoy a powerful opportunity to promote their work and raise their public profile across a robust awards gallery on SEGD.org, visited by hundreds of thousands of unique visitors worldwide. Award-winning firms become more competitive in recruiting top talent while their projects are benchmarked and referenced by prospective clients, other designers, and students for years.
The early submission deadline is January 31, 2023, via SEGD’s online design awards entry system. However, submissions will be accepted with late fees through February 27, 2023. Submission guidelines are available for download.
Winners will be honored during the 2023 SEGD Conference, August 24-26 in Washington, D.C., and announced on SEGD.org, in SEGD’s annual design awards print publication, and via other media outlets.
