10 Reasons to Attend Xlab 2018

Read Time: 2.5 minutes

SEGD’s XLAB returns for the eighth year as the only experiential graphic design event focused on the technology-infused future of storytelling for place. Over two jam-packed days, November 1–2, XLAB 2018 will bring together the people and practices on the cutting edge of experience design, digital media and technology, immersive and interactive public environments and cultural and consumer experiences.

There are a TON of great reasons to attend XLAB 2018, here are a mere 10:

1. The location: For the first time ever, Xlab’s main sessions will be held in Brooklyn at BRIC. A new venue in a different borough means new faces, new sights and different restaurants.

2. The timing: Autumn in New York is not just a sappy film, it’s a wonderful time to be there. Enjoy the crisp air and pumpkin-spiced treats that the season offers, as you take in some well-deserved design events. (P.S. Halloween in New York does sound fun.)

3. The firms: A wide array of award-winning experiential design firms will be participating, like Hush, Bluecadet, Gallagher & Associates, NewProject, Blue Telescope, SET and OpenEye Global.

4. The voices: The speakers for Xlab 2018 are absolutely outstanding. Just one of the sessions features Ricardo Prada, PhD from Google UX, Amy Blackman of A Hundred Years and Jason Bruges from Jason Bruges Studio. (P.S. There are five equally impressive sessions in total.)

5. The storytelling: You’ll discover storytelling models from international emergent practices—Gagarin, Lorem Ipsum and Zuzor—that focus on human empathy and emotion as key factors in telling stories that matter.

6. The tours: SEGD’s optional project and studio tours are a longstanding community favorite you don’t want to miss and with morning and afternoon slots in Brooklyn and Midtown, you can even go on two! Details will be announced soon. (P.S. Optional experiential tours are an additional $50 each.)

7. The technology: The advent of AI, machine-learning and computational technology extend the canvas of traditional toolkits of designers. Xlab’s sessions will examine what this means for the nature and role of design and how it can shape the experiential spaces of tomorrow.

8. The friends: SEGD is known as the friendliest design association and there’s good reason for it. Plenty of networking opportunities are built into Xlab, from coffee to cocktail breaks. (P.S. Don’t miss the New York City Chapter Mixer on. The evening of November 1.)

9. The finale: For the second year, the culmination of Xlab will be the Best of Show Award Keynote—this year with Refik Anadol of Refik Anadol Studio, winner of the Best of Show and Honor Award for his project Archive Dreaming.

10. The week: New York Digital Signage Week is happening October 29 through November 2 with Xlab closing out the festivities. Maximize your time in New York by participating in a broad range of free and paid activities from discussion panels and tours, to parties and lunches. (P.S. Your boss will love the travel two-fer.)
