The SEGD Academic Summit: Advancing Design Education and Research

The 2024 SEGD Academic Summit provides the opportunity to convene global educators, students, researchers, and practitioners from the field of experiential design whose academic and professional research as well as curriculum innovation continue to impact and reshape the past, present and future advancement of the field. This free, virtual, two-day event on Wednesday, June 26 and Thursday, June 27, 2024 from 12:30 – 5:00 pm ET,  is a key platform for global collaboration and knowledge exchange in the field of experiential design, hosted by SEGD and our Academic Task Force; and presenting sponsor SignAgent.

The annual SEGD Academic Summit has become a forum for global design academics, researchers, and students to share their research, innovative curriculum, and projects.

The scope of research and innovation discussed at the Summit includes branded environments, digital experiences, exhibitions, placemaking, public installations, strategic research, planning, and wayfinding. Speakers are selected through a blind peer review of abstracts submitted to our annual Call for Papers. Selected authors are invited to present their findings at the Summit and develop full-manuscripts that are digitally published in SEGD Communication + Place, a peer-reviewed journal that supports professional development and education in experiential design. These authors’ contributions are vital to advancing diversity in design education and professional practice.

This year the Summit is organized into four main themes. Each theme incorporates 3-4 individual speakers who will present their insights and research. Following these presentations, there will be moderated panel discussions that bring together the perspectives of the speakers, allowing for a deeper exploration of each topic.

Presentation Themes

Day 1:

  • Inclusive Methods in Practice and Pedagogy
  • The Politics of Storytelling

Day 2 :

  • Exploring Equity and Representation in Spatial and Exhibition Design
  • Designing for Accessibility, Health and Wellbeing
Breakout Sessions

The last hour of each day is devoted to Breakout Sessions where attendees, speakers and moderators will select between two topics and will come together to have a dynamic exchange of ideas, and contribute to the ongoing evolution of the experiential design field. The format of these virtual breakout sessions will allow attendees to select their preferred topic at the start of the breakout sessions.

Day 1 Breakout Sessions:

  • Designing Multi-Sensory Experiences and Cross-Disciplinary Collaboration
  • Critical Perspectives: Design Criticism, Writing, Research Methods, and Ethics

Day 2 Breakout Sessions:

  • Effective Academic Communication: Design Abstracts, Paper Writing, and Grant Proposals
  • Fostering Leadership and Mentorship: Engaging in Student Activities and Extracurricular Involvement

The free event is open to all professionals, educators and students interested in learning more about trends in design education research, projects and curriculum innovation. Please register in advance to be a part of this virtual event.
