Environmental graphics in buildings and outdoor spaces identify destinations and direct and inform people. Signage is the principal component of most environmental graphic programs, which can also include landmarks, colors, finishes, light levels and other architectural features. A carefully designed system of signage and wayfinding supports and enhances the overall character of a space.
Kate Keating Associates develops signage systems for a variety of environments, from complex medical facilities with thousands of signs to highly customized donor recognition installation; from historic renovations to high-tech corporate campuses.
Kate is known as a pioneer in the environmental graphic design community and has contributed to the success of many award-winning, community-oriented projects over the past 20 years. Additionally, Kate is credited with the development of Universal Wayfinding, a system that provides clear and legible wayfinding in healthcare settings for people with Limited English Proficiency.
Julie has been designing signage and wayfinding programs for architecturally significant buildings and environments for over 20 years. As an accomplished designer and successful project manager, she brings a rare blend of left and right brain capabilities to her projects. She firmly identifies the defining architectural or environmental characteristics of her projects and respects the context of the work.
KKA's approach to these project types, and to many others, is based on several basic principles:
- Signage design is a collaborative process that includes the client, the architect, the interior designer, the landscape architect and other team consultants.
- Signage should be designed to reflect the particular architectural character of each project; it should be integrated into the architectural environment.
- Successful wayfinding requires hierarchical sequences of information presented simply and logically.
- Good signage design goes beyond form, color and legibility; it also addresses durability, flexibility, cost effectiveness and compliance with regulatory requirements which promote life safety and equal access.
