Wrapping Up with Purpose: SEGD Dallas Experience Day 3

The final day of the 2024 SEGD Conference Experience Dallas on Saturday, September 28th brings together powerful insights and discussions focused on purpose, provocation and empathy. With the theme “Design with Purpose,” Day 3 is packed with sessions that will challenge us to think deeply about how experience design can empower connections and foster inclusive, meaningful narratives.

2024 SEGD Achievement Awards

Kicking off the day, Genell Hoechstetter of Art Processors, alongside David Siegel of Designtex, will present the 2024 SEGD Achievement Awards, recognizing individuals who have made a significant impact on the field of experience design. We’ll also be joined by Cybelle Jones, SEGD’s CEO, for this celebration of creative excellence.

Celebrating SEGD Fellows

Immediately following, we’ll hear from three esteemed 2024 SEGD Fellows:

  • Stefan Sagmeister, a visionary designer known for his provocative work,
  • Shirin Frangoul-Brückner, co-founder of ATELIER BRÜCKNER
  • Marquise Stillwell, founder of Openbox and an advocate for design’s role in social equity.

These luminaries will share their journeys and reflect on how their careers have shaped the landscape of experience design.

Afterward, grab a mimosa and network with peers before returning for a special SEGD Fellow Q&A session, where you’ll have the chance to engage directly with these design leaders.

Navigating Narratives through Experience Design

The afternoon dives into three captivating tracks, each designed to inspire and challenge:

  • Track 1: Purposeful Wayfinding will explore how technology and design are shaping modern navigation systems. Speakers include experts like Stephen Minning from PAM, Ridge Rees from AVI-SPL and Cheryl Catterall, who will discuss how digital experiences are integrated into wayfinding to enhance user journeys.
  • Track 2: Designing Meaningful Narratives will focus on Texas’s complex histories. Beth Stricker and Michelle Cuellar Everidge, PhD from The Witte Museum will share the stories behind the Black Cowboys exhibit, followed by Dr. Tyler Taylor and Kate Carey from Alamo Trust, Inc., along with Juanita Wichienkuer from G&A, who will present Creating Confluence Around Contested Histories at the Alamo. These sessions will examine how museums and public spaces can foster understanding and connection through authentic, challenging storytelling.

Track 3: Enhancing Empathy through Accessibility offers a hands-on workshop on inclusive design. Sponsored by the Eskenazi School of Art, Architecture + Design at Indiana University and Good-Lite, this session led by Taekyeom Lee from Indiana University Bloomington, will immerse participants in vision simulation activities, highlighting how designers can create more accessible environments for users with visual impairments.

Closing Keynotes: Immersive Design and Audacious Ideas

The conference will conclude with two dynamic closing keynotes. First, Jae-eun Chung from RAA and Stephen Platenberg from Cortina Productions will present “Immersion with Purpose: The People’s House,” offering insights into how the White House was transformed into an immersive public space. Next, Brian Mirakian from Populous will explore bold designs that are revolutionizing the world of sports and education, inspiring us to think audaciously in our own work.

Finally, we’ll wrap up the conference with closing remarks before heading to the Chapter Closing Party at The Exchange Hall at AT&T Discovery District to celebrate the connections, creativity, and innovations sparked throughout the week.
