Toohey, C.S.C., Award for Social Justice is given to a member of the Notre Dame faculty or staff who has dedicated himself or herself to teaching and research that emphasize the social justice dimension of the Gospel in an exemplary way. Neeta Verma sees design as a tool for instrumenting social equity and justice. Her teaching lies at the intersection of social innovation and collaborative practices. In her Social Design International Collaboration course, she brought Notre Dame students to India.
The course created a global context for the students to experience and explore global issues like sustainability through a cross-cultural prism. Locally, she has worked on mitigation of youth violence where the goal is to draw the most vulnerable into the conversation. The design solution provides a master plan for arts programming that offers healing and engagement for youth and families affected by violence and equips them with proficiencies at the intersections of art, design, and technology.
