Breaking out of their role as generic waystations, airports are creating compelling experiences with public art, interpretive storytelling, and environmental graphics.

Many of us are filled with dread at the thought of having to spend an inordinate amount of time at an airport. We try to plan our arrival just right, negotiating road conditions, check-in lines, security procedures, restroom stops, and quick caffeine fixes. If we cruise up to the gate just as we hear our boarding call announced over the loudspeakers, we’ve won a major victory.

Washington, D.C., is a content-rich venue for the 2010 SEGD Conference + Expo.

With its vocabulary of granite and marble and limestone, carved letters and majestic sculptures, classical architecture and stately canopies of trees, Washington, D.C., tells a story.

There are many individual stories told within the walls of its museums, inside its art galleries, and on the stone tablets marking its memorials. But collectively, the city’s monumental features tell just one: the story of what it means to be American.

The Official NYC Visitors Center is a digital-era launching pad for New York tourists.

The renovation of the Official NYC Information Center is not a mere before-and-after story. In the hands of New York-based designers Local Projects and WXY Architecture, the storefront space in midtown Manhattan has been transformed from a stereotypical visitor-service station into a new model that swaps printed maps and brochures for digital interfaces that are seamlessly integrated with the architecture.

Solid Light working on the Kentucky Bourbon Trail Experience

Solid Light (Louisville, Ky.) is working on Louisville’s first-ever entry to the Kentucky Bourbon Trail: the Evan Williams Bourbon Experience, set to open on Louisville’s historical Main Street cultural district this fall. The experience will take visitors to the heart of the city in 1797, when Evan Williams founded the nation’s first commercial bourbon distillery.
