When Google’s Kirkland campus was set to dramatically expand, they needed a new wayfinding scheme for both Googlers and visitors. The desire was a design approach that was innovative in the way it reflects the company’s values and attitude.
This first-ever visitor center for the globally-recognized Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center was carved out of a defunct, 550-square-foot credit union space on the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center campus.
The challenge was to take a small budget and a tiny space and establish a brand new visitor center to tell the inspiring Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center story. The intent was to create a welcoming, informative and inspiring space for a diverse audience of benefactors, patients, researchers, employees, and visitors to the Seattle campus.
Mad Campus was a unique public art project at the University of Washington’s Seattle campus. Twelve emerging artists created temporary, site-specific works inspired by outdoor locations across the campus. Studio Matthews devised an identity and wayfinding system to visually connect the diverse installations and create an overall experience.
The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation Visitor Center exhibition explains how and why the foundation was founded, and describes its work around the globe. Perhaps most importantly, it creates a personal relationship with the visitor, inviting them into a conversation about global issues, prompting questions and providing activities for them to explore how every individual can make a positive difference.
