Donut King

Honor Award
Donut King, Lorenc Design

To market Donut King to investors, its founder and Lorenc Design incorporated the new prototype design of this store into the marketing package. The ceiling, menu board, posters, floor and layout establish brand identity for each new shop, and are accompanied by such motifs as the donut-shaped chairs and small tables adorned with daily fresh flowers. The yellow-striped canopy above the serving area would reference the early morning sun. Everything else builds on this upbeat feeling.

Concord Mills

Merit Award
Concord Mills, The Mills Corporation, Kiku Obata & Company

Concord Mills is a 1.4-million-square-foot retail and entertainment center by the Mills Corporation. The design concept is based on regional imagery, celebrating North Carolina's crafts, festivals, nature, music, sports and traditions. One major design challenge was keeping the overall design concept in place while the building was constantly evolving as new tenants were added. In addition, maintaining design integrity through fabrication and installation was a challenge given the short timeframe and the multitude of construction people working simultaneously on the project.

Home Depot Design Center

Merit Award
Home Depot Design Center, Home Depot, Little

The Home Depot Design Center is the next-generation store concept by the venerable big-box retailer. In this innovative concept, the second-largest retailer in the world aimed to shed its unrefined warehouse image, suitable for contractors and hard-core do-it-yourselfers, in favor of a more polished look to attract a younger, urban demographic with a “do-it-for-me” mentality and a need for complete design solutions.
