Metro Opposites Campaign

Merit Award
Metro Opposites Campaign, Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority, Metro Creative Services

Metro’s Opposites campaign, which debuted in August 2008, sought to promote Metro ridership and raise awareness of its services both directly with consumers and through business-to-business channels. Its initial goal was to increase ridership and raise awareness of Metro and its many services, which seek to improve mobility and quality of life in the region. But the overall program was also born of a strategic and timely idea.

Obsessions Make My Life Worse and My Work Better

Merit Award
Obsessions Make My Life Worse and My Work Better, Experimenta/Urban Play, Sagmeister Inc.

On September 13, 2008, Sagmeister Inc. began the installation of a mural on Waagdragerhof Square in Amsterdam. Over the course of eight days and with the help of more than 100 volunteers, 250,000 euro-cent coins were sorted into four different shades and carefully placed over this 300-sq.-meter area to spell out the sentence:

“Obsessions make my life worse and my work better.”

After completion, the coins were left free and unguarded for the public to interact with.

Risking Reality

Merit Award
Risking Reality, Berardo Collection Museum, R2 Design

The Arriscar o Real (Risking Reality) exhibition at the Berardo Collection Museum in Lisbon focuses on various artists who have explored the mimesis (imitation) of reality and transformed this question into a paradox. Divided into three sections with corresponding spaces, the exhibition explores the meaning of the real and figurative in space. Rather than relying solely on an interpretive approach, R2 Design used three-dimensional typography to intervene directly in the 3,000-sq.-meter space.
