A new brand and wayfinding signage bring clarity, scale, and drama to a venerable Los Angeles icon.

When the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County chose to renovate its existing facilities instead of spending $300 million on a new building, it knew that more than just the physical environment needed to change. To stay relevant, the museum needed to rethink its very mission and the way it engages with visitors and patrons.

A distinct visual style simplifies complicated statistics and immediately engages the firm's online audience. Carbone Smolan Agency (New York) partnered with the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County to bring the graphic personality of the museum to the third dimension, which is now fully realized. CSA’s initial charge—to develop a wayfinding and graphics system—needed to lead visitors through the museum—both during construction and after—while complementing diverse architectural conditions.

Carbone Smolan Agency (New York) created a website for D.C. law firm Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld, a firm with more than 800 lawyers in seven regions. The new site emphasizes Akin Gump’s distinguishing characteristic: entrepreneurship. A modular design that distills information in a flexible way allows for customization around each of 18 practice areas. This approach helps “future-proof” the site in an increasingly competitive and global arena.

Carbone Smolan Agency (New York) worked with Carnegie to relaunch the brand when the company released a plant-based version of its legacy product Xorel, a high-performance textile. CSA recommended video as the medium, celebrating Xorel's organic property with vivid imagery and a playful tagline. By simultaneously shooting still photos and video, CSA optimized resources while ensuring visual continuity from the video to print campaign.
