The Contemporary Craft Center Featuring Tara Donovan

Merit Award 2017
The Contemporary Craft Center Featuring Tara Donovan

The Contemporary Craft Center is a place to both see and make art. The center emphasizes a hands-on approach to learning and creating—the same approach Art Center College of Design student Britteny Teng took when creating a visual language for her micro-exhibition.

The assignment was to create an interactive installation to complement the exhibition of an artist’s work and distill the concept that the artist is trying to convey and reimagine it for others to not only enjoy the experience but to understand the process behind the artist’s vision.

Anne Burdick

Anne Burdick is the Chair of Media Design Practices (MDP), a graduate program at Art Center College of Design focused on designing for the future of information and communication technologies. To address the global and social dimensions of this work, the MDP recently established two tracks. In the Field track, students work on social issues in a real-world context—the first cohort just returned from working at UNICEF’s Innovation Lab in Kampala, Uganda.

One Day Poem Pavilion

The One-Day Poem Pavilion is a site-specific installation that harnesses the rotation of the earth to create "shadow poems" projected through hundreds of perforations in the dome-shaped shelter.

Poetry in Motion

A “slow media” installation allows visitors to interact with light, shadow, words, and the pull of the earth.

Time is an artificial construct, created by humans to meet our needs. Consumed as we are with how quickly it passes—and despite our determination to make it just another commodity—time defies our efforts to control it.

In Search of Identity

Merit Award
In Search of Identity, Nikolai Cornell, Art Center College of Design

This interactive exhibit uses a human-scale display system to allow visitors to explore the photographic work of artist Tatiana Parcero on multiple levels of their own choosing. By projecting through a large pane of half-silvered glass and embedding a diverse range of sensors into the psychical display, the designer created an innovative way for users to incorporate into and interact with the artist's work. The exhibit also includes a dynamic spatial interface that allows the user to explore a timeline of the artist's personal and professional history.
