Join us on August 29, 2024 for the fifth installment of our 2024 SEGD Voices Webinar Series, curated by L’Rai Arthur-Mensah of Local Projects. This year, our focus is on “Respectful Engagement” — a theme that underlines the critical importance of fostering a culture imbued with respect and professionalism. Through this series, gain valuable insights, strategies, and best practices designed to enrich your professional environment.
SEGD Voices: Designing Intentional Spaces will be presented by Maria Papiez, Director of Sustainable Design at EwingCole. Maria has 20 years of experience in architecture, science, and education. She is a registered architect with degrees in environmental chemistry and biology, and a passion for sustainable design grew from her mutual interest in the built and natural environments.
Maria will discuss health and equity (for people and nature) through material choices. Designers have great influence when it comes to the materials we select in our work, and with that comes great responsibility to our fellow humans and all nature. Material lifecycles can have negative impacts on health, so let’s use the frameworks, programs, and certifications that can help us be stewards for all.
Key takeaways from this webinar will include: how to salvage and reuse materials and design for disassembly; how to choose local products to support local artisans, community, and economy while reducing impact; and how to abide by the “Goldilocks Principle” and use just the right amount of materials, not too much and not too little. And remember to start with a few choices – don’t feel like you must do it all at once.
