Muhammad Nafisur Rahman

Muhammad Nafisur Rahman is an Assistant Professor of the Communication Design program at the University of Cincinnati’s College of Design, Architecture, Art, and Planning, where he has been teaching typography core courses and design methodology since 2019. Trained as an architect in Bangladesh, Muhammad holds a M.Des. in Graphic Design from University of Illinois at Chicago, UIC and Post-Graduate Studies in Typography from Institute of Visual Communication (FHNW) Basel, Switzerland and Graduate Certificate in Urban Design from University of Cincinnati. Currently, Muhammad is pursuing his PhD in Architecture with a focus on political public space, visual identity and urban typography and serving as the Assistant Editor of the Visible Language — the oldest peer-reviewed design journal.
He worked as Branded Environments Designer-II at Perkins+Will, Chicago and HDR Architecture Inc. and Academic Advisory Council for Signage Research and Education (AACSRE) research scholar. In conjunction with his research and professional affiliations, he has taught students in communication design and architecture programs for over seven years. Owing to his background as a practitioner, Muhammad takes an interdisciplinary and practice-informed approach
to research that gives him the ability to bridge between built environment and typography.
