Michael Stiller is an artist, designer, interactive technologist, and teacher whose career has spanned the worlds of performance, architecture, experiential environments, and entertainment. Michael found his first metier in 1984, creating physical and projected artworks in New York’s vibrant downtown dance and performance community, and in the 1990’s he embarked on a lighting design career that synthesized these multidisciplinary interests into a practice focused on experiential environments. His architectural designs are represented in the exhibit, corporate, retail, hospitality, and municipal markets. His theatrical designs have been produced in dozens of international venues ranging from raw industrial spaces to classical opera houses, state theaters, and arenas. And his work for camera has appeared in major motion pictures and network television.
In 1998 Michael founded Michael Stiller Design, where he directs a versatile team of designers, project managers, and programmers. He made his Broadway debut in 2018, as production designer for the rock/classical mashup: Rocktopia. Michael Stiller is the recipient of a New York Dance and Performance (Bessie) Award, an IESNYC Lumen Award, two IES Illumination Awards of Merit, and a LIT Design Award. He is currently on the faculty of FIT’s School of Graduate Studies, in the Exhibition and Experience Design program. Michael is the author of a textbook, Quality Lighting for High Performance Buildings, and he frequently delivers talks to professional groups on lighting, wellness, and sustainability.
