Gray Matters is an award winning design studio and women-owned business. Our work spans the fields of multi-media, performance, installation art, architecture, and urbanism. We are choreographers of social experience, framing bodies within materials to create meaning. With our different minds and diverse strengths we ask deep questions; take a firm stance; to strive to tell beautiful stories. As why-askers and yea-sayers, we seek to transcend the either/or, and to embrace the both/and.
Merica May is an architect and artist working in New York City. She gained her experience in her first career as a ballet dancer and through a decade at the multi-disciplinary studio Diller Scofidio and Renfro leading the design and construction of cultural and institutional projects including the Park Union Bridge, Microsoft Headquarters, and Adelaide Contemporary. In 2022 Merica May launched her own design practice Gray Matters The studio blends her passions for performance and placemaking. Their recent projects engage reuse, big data, gender, history, housing, and race.
