Jonny Peterson is a Design Director in Gensler’s Brand Design practice, where he leads teams in crafting innovative, story-driven graphic programs that address every aspect of brand strategy—from multimedia communications to signage and wayfinding systems to iconic sculptural landmarks. Based in Gensler’s Washington, D.C. office, with deep roots and continued work in the Los Angeles region, Jonny’s creative leadership spans both coasts and supports projects worldwide.

As a Design Director and client relationship lead, Jonny oversees several of Gensler’s key accounts across the tech, financial, consumer product, and sports sectors, to name a few—guiding design vision and strategic alignment within complex, multidisciplinary architectural teams. His portfolio includes recent major projects such as Capital One Arena, Amazon’s East Coast Headquarters, and the Turning Stone Resort & Casino.

Firmwide, as Gensler’s Southeast Regional Practice Area Leader for Brand Design, he leads initiatives across the Southeast region and firmwide. In this role, he supports business development efforts, guides marketing strategy, and helps target and shape key client opportunities. Additionally, Jonny spearheads Gensler’s firm-wide collaboration with SEGD, strengthening the firm’s leadership within the industry through thought leadership opportunities, promotion of Gensler chapter chairs worldwide, and mentorship of emerging design talent.

Beyond the firm, Jonny is Co-Chair of the Washington, D.C. SEGD Chapter, where, along with co-chair Carrie Bruns, he reignited the region’s experiential design community through purposeful monthly gatherings that built energy and connection. During their post-pandemic tenure, they grew chapter event attendance from 5 to 50 participants. Through a mix of cultural immersion, skill-building, and mentorship, the chapter has created a vibrant network that reflects the city’s rich design landscape.

Recently, Jonny served as Co-Chair of the 2025 SEGD Wayfinding + Placemaking Conference, where he led programming, curated speakers, and emceed the event. His contributions were recognized with the 2025 SEGD Co-Chair of the Year award, honoring his commitment to inclusive placemaking and the power of design to connect people and place. In 2026, Jonny is proud to be joining the SEGD Board of Directors to continue advancing branded storytelling in the built environment.

Prior to joining Gensler, Jonny was lead designer at Selbert Perkins Design, setting the design vision for major projects including including the Wilshire Grand Tower in downtown Los Angeles, the Gemological Institute of America, and the Baha Mar Resort in the Bahamas.

Jonny’s work has received multiple honors, including the IIDA Best of Asia Pacific Award for Hyundai Card’s Studio Black in Seoul and recognition in the Rethink Dupont Competition for a public art installation in Washington, D.C. In his free time he is a passionate advocate for community-driven design, supporting the arts as a volunteer with the local arts nonprofit Dupont Underground.
