Gerard has been a leader in developing exhibits that connect with diverse audiences for nearly four decades. With solid design schooling and an early background in filmmaking and animation, he has dedicated his career to the field of interpretive design, with a particular focus on museum exhibits, be they artifact/collections driven, story-based (with no existing collections), entertainment-based, or memorial experiences. He has purposefully structured Eisterhold Associates in a way that allows him to lead each project from inception to installation. In short, the portfolio of Eisterhold Associates is also the portfolio of Gerard Eisterhold.
My super power is
Realizing that no one has any.
What I love about experience design
My first instinct for the “tell us what you love” prompt is to talk about native grapes and my work with TerraVox Winery. I see it as a form of museum work, even though it doesn’t fall under traditional exhibit design. It’s a form of preservation and storytelling—just through wine instead of objects behind glass. Atlas Obscura says: “At TerraVox, every wine is made with grapes native to the Americas, a trait so rare that founder Jerry Eisterhold describes his business as more of a museum than a winery.” That framing really resonates with me and captures why the work feels so meaningful.
Best piece of advice I've ever heard
Buy only two kinds of socks. When you get up in the morning, you can grope for 3 socks, knowing that you will have 1 pair of matching socks. This frees up hours of time that would have been spent sorting socks and opens up other possibilities.
