The American LGBTQ+ Museum Update
We thought we would provide a short update on our progress in this edition of our newsletter. We are planning more virtual and in-person programs in the fall on figures like Bayard Rustin and touchstones like the AIDS Memorial Quilt, so stay tuned.
Our summer was spent reviewing proposals from exhibition development and design firms. We received 80 submissions from firms that want to work with us over the next three years to create the inaugural exhibitions for our home in New York. We are narrowing the field and will announce our choice in December. In addition to planning for our exhibitions in New York, we are busily working on plans for our on-line museum and a series of traveling exhibitions aimed at LGBTQ+ community centers and history museums around the country.
In the meantime, our friends at the New-York Historical Society will begin construction on their new wing in early 2024. Our future home will be in that new wing, thanks to this wonderful partnership (and the support of many people), and we are on track for a late 2026 opening. It won’t be long before New York’s first museum will become home to New York’s newest museum. And we can’t wait to welcome you. This is your museum and if you join us as founding member, you will even see your name on the wall when you arrive.
