Mayer/Reed Waterfront Urban Design Study Strengthens Portland’s Connection to the Willamette River
The Mayer/Reed Waterfront Urban Design Study is helping Portland look at its downtown riverfront with fresh eyes. Momentum is building around the Central City Waterfront Urban Design Study, created by Mayer/Reed for the City of Portland Bureau of Planning and Sustainability. The study explores how downtown Portland can build a stronger relationship with the Willamette River through urban design, public investment, private development, and community-led action. From improved pedestrian spaces to new gathering areas, the work presents a clear vision for a more connected, active, and welcoming waterfront.
The study highlights several opportunities for change in Portland’s downtown core. These include a reimagined Naito Parkway with a west side pedestrian promenade, creative lighting near the World Trade Center, and streetscape ideas that connect historic districts to the river. Together, these concepts show how design can support movement, business activity, events, and a stronger sense of place along the Willamette River.
