Mayer/Reed Shapes Meaningful Civic Design at the Oregon State Capitol

Granite installation by Mayer/Reed at the Oregon State Capitol entry plaza in Oregon

Mayer/Reed is helping transform the Oregon State Capitol campus through a new accessible entry plaza that blends landscape architecture, public art, and Indigenous storytelling. Working alongside artist Dr. Phillip Cash Cash and a multidisciplinary design team, the firm hand-selected granite boulders from a quarry and used advanced LiDAR scanning technology to bring the installation to life. The carved stone elements create a strong connection between the site, regional history, and the people who visit the Capitol grounds each day.

The project reflects Mayer/Reed’s thoughtful approach to experiential design and showcases how landscape architecture can create deeper cultural connections within public spaces. As part of the larger Capitol accessibility and renovation effort, the plaza introduces a welcoming civic experience while honoring Indigenous narratives and Oregon’s natural landscape.
