Wimbledon Celebrates The Centenary Year Of Centre Court, Showcases New Wayfinding & Signage

The Wimbledon Fortnight expected to see 500,000 visitors arrive at The All England Lawn Tennis Club for the world’s most prestigious tennis event. This year is a special one for Wimbledon, marking 100 years of Centre Court in its current Church Road location.

The AELTC prides itself on delivering a best-in-class service, continually investing time and effort to understand what their guests want and expect from such an iconic global sporting attraction.

A recent audit found that 98% of Wimbledon visitors used signage of some form whilst on site, with 90% relying on maps in particular to plan their journeys with confidence, demonstrating the importance of wayfinding to the overall guest experience.

The Maynard Design Group was appointed in November 2021 to be a key part of the team responsible for designing and implementing a new wayfinding strategy and signage system for The Championships 2022. The new suite of branded signage and mapping tools, including those within the historic Centre Court, were designed to help visitors navigate intuitively throughout the grounds, making full use of all the amenities and attractions TheChampionships has to offer.

In just over eight months the team delivered over 700 new wayfinding signs, information boards and staffed kiosks which greet fans arriving over the Wimbledon Fortnight.

Simon Lee, who led the project on behalf of Maynard Design, said: “Our brief from the AELTC was clear – deliver identifiably Wimbledon branding, signage and mapping that continues to open up the Grounds and The Championships for use by all guests – whether they are camping overnight for tickets as super fans, working within the Grounds or attending as corporate guests.

“The wayfinding is designed to help guests flow seamlessly across a hyper-dynamic site, as well as finding their court seats, food and drink, and meetings points with minimal effort.

“We have also made the history of this globally prestigious tournament easily accessible for today’s customers by including facts and stories about Wimbledon’s heritage on sign boards which tennis fans from far and wide will be interested in. By offering engaging knowledge and insights alongside functional wayfinding, the signage itself can become destinations in their own right.”

“The past eight months have been fast-paced, as you would expect for any global event of this scale. However, the AELTC’s unwavering commitment to getting the best possible outcome for their guests has always remained the steady constant. We’re proud of what we’ve achieved together in such a short space of time.”

Maynard Design Group has recently been on a growth drive in addition to being involved with a number of high profile projects, announcing in March this year the acquisition of Transport Design Consultancy (TDC) to extend their global reach in the transport sector, delivering the wayfinding and signage on the Elizabeth line (Crossrail) in May and then welcoming its former Head of Architecture Julian Robinson on board to join the team in June.
