SEGD FILM FOCUS
Screening – Open from Wednesday, May 20 through Friday, May 22
Live Discussion - Friday, May 22 @ 8:00pm EDT
Join us for an exclusive screening of “The New Bauhaus”, an odyssey through the life and legacy of László Moholy-Nagy, the innovative artist and educator whose pioneering approach to integrating technology into design continues to influence and inspire. The 89-minute film explores tensions between art and commerce, tradition and experimentation, past and present — and future.
Patrons will receive a link to watch the film from Wednesday, May 20 through Friday, May 22, and are invited to a live online discussion with The New Bauhaus Co-Producer, Ashley Lukasik, artist and subject, Barbara Kasten, and SEGD Fellow Jan Lorenc taking place on May 22nd at 8:00pm EDT.
Released in celebration of the 100th year anniversary of the Bauhaus, The New Bauhaus was directed by Alysa Nahmias, whose past credits include: “Unfinished Spaces”, a story of Cuba’s architecture and revolution, “Unrest”, “What We Left Unfinished”, and “Afternoon of a Faun: Tanaquil Le Clercq”. Notes Nahmias, “Making The New Bauhaus has reminded me of the importance of finding new ways to create and inspire in a tumultuous time.”
Barbara Kasten, a Chicago-based artist influenced by the Bauhaus and Moholy-Nagy, creates photographs and video projections that evoke an experience of movement through modernist architecture that have been exhibited at MoMA, Hammer Museum, and LACMA.
Jan Lorenc, a Polish immigrant, leads a multidisciplinary team of architects, graphic designers, sculptors and industrial designers at Lorenc+Yoo Design, the firm that he founded in 1978. He earned degrees in industrial design from the Illinois Institute of Technology, and an architecture degree from the Georgia Institute of Technology.
Ashley Lukasik recently founded Murmur Ring to curate immersive experiences that make emerging, complex challenges tangible so organizations can better accomplish their strategic aims. Ashley spent several years at IIT Institute of Design, which inspired her to launch and co-produce The New Bauhaus.
At a time when movie theaters are shuttered and film festivals are on pause, SEGD introduces Film Focus, a movie and discussion series revealing great stories of global heroes. Stay tuned for more coming attractions.
