Urban Identity Designer for Southeast Asia
William Harald-Wong is the Founder and Design Director of William Harald-Wong & Associates, an urban identity design consultancy based in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, with a special focus on brand, culture and the city.
With more than 30 years experience, he collaborates with branding strategists, international design and advertising firms, architects, landscape architects, researchers, builders and local community to enhance the human, social and cultural experience of a place.
With a dedicated team and a network of local and regional associates in specialized fields, the company undertakes wayfinding, signage and environmental graphics design, implementation and supervision for medium to large-scale building and city projects.
William’s recent awards include:
2014–Special Award for Culture, Design for Asia Awards, HONG KONG (as Co-curator of ‘Colours of Asia’, a research project by The Design Alliance Asia covering 13 countries / regions)
2013–Distinguished Chinese Award, Chinese Who’s Who Society, CHINA & HONG KONG
2012–Designomics Leadership Award, World Brand Congress, INDIA
2011–Lifetime Achievement Award from Design Development Centre, MALAYSIA
2009-2010–International Design Achievement Award, from Construction Industry Sub-council of China Council for the Promotion of International Trade & Qinghua Fine Arts College, Beijing, CHINA
William strongly believes, especially in the context of fast developing Asia, that culture plays an increasingly vital role in the urban environment and our recent work for museums, urban spaces, wayfinding and signage programs have given people a sense of identity, ownership, pride and purpose.
Some of the firm’s key projects are
• East Ledang, Nusajaya — Brand development and environmental graphics for the premium residential precinct of Nusajaya, a new regional city of 24,000 acres. Client: UEM Land.
• Revitalization of Kuala Lumpur’s Innercity (Concept Study), a collaboration with C’Arch Architects. Client: Bolton.
• Cat Ba Amatina, Vietnam — Consultation for a 172 hectare world-class integrated development near Halong Bay. Client: Vinaconex ITC, Vietnam.
• Muzium Sultan Abu Bakar — A 2-year project comprising brand strategy, wayfinding, signage and environmental graphics, as well as research and curatorial assistance. Client: Lembaga Muzium Pahang.
William is also the Founder and Chairman of The Design Alliance Asia (tDA Asia), a collaborative network of Asian designers across 13 countries/regions. tDA Asia is registered in Hong Kong and Singapore to facilitate regional work—we help clients communicate across Asia.
He served as Vice-President of Icograda 2001–2003 and is currently on the Regional Expert Panel, Design for Asia Awards, Hong Kong Design Centre.
