Why You Should Submit Your Work in the 2018 SEGD Global Design Awards

The 2017 SEGD Global Design Awards Best of Show winner, the Kunstmuseum Basel Light Frieze, reinvented how digital technology is used and implemented in order to create an integrated communication solution that exemplifies the very best in Swiss graphics.

One of the jurors said: "This project is simply breathtaking. It redefines what it means to integrate digital environmental graphics with architecture in the public realm. It totally blurs the lines between communication design and built environment design where both are read as one unified expression." Another said: "The Kunstmuseum’s Frieze is an unexpected and magical merger of light and stone that makes you look twice… and then try to figure out how they created it. I hope the future looks like this."

The design team responsible for this groundbreaking project was led by iart ag Chairman and CEO Valentin Spiess, who will also be serving on the 2018 Global Design AwardsJury. Here, Valentin shares his process behind selecting the Best of Show winner, elements of a winning project and why you should submit your entries today. (Deadline is January 31!)

What does it mean to win Best of Show for the Kunstmuseum Basel Light Frieze project?

It is a great honor that shows us we are going in the right direction. Getting architecture and spatial communication together in a symbiotic relationship has been a long-time goal for us.

How do you approach design?

By engaging our clients in the creative process of the project and constantly striving for innovation. We don't accept the status quo; we are staying curious.

Out of all the projects you could have submitted for the 2017 SEGD Global Design Awards, why did you choose the Kunstmuseum Basel Light Frieze?

We thought the light frieze would have the best chances of winning an award; it is a symbiosis between experiential design and architecture—a forward-thinking, custom-made solution.

How has your firm benefited from winning the Best of Show award?

We certainly gained visibility and lots of attention in the United States.

What are you most looking forward to in serving on this year’s jury?

Discovering exceptional projects and getting an overview of contemporary global work in experiential design.

What do you think are (or should be) elements of a winning project?

I think a winning project should have a clerverness about it, besides being unique and having great design value.

Why should someone submit an entry into the 2018 SEGD Global Design Awards?

To get an evaluation of your work by fellow professionals in your field.
