Terrell Place Tour with ESI Design

Terrell Place
Wednesday, December 7, 2016 - 1:00pm to 1:45pm

Terrell Place in downtown Washington, D.C. is an iconic 476,000 square foot office and retail complex comprised of three connected components: the historic former Hecht’s Department Store, where in 1950 Mary Church Terrell led a successful protest regarding its segregated dining policy; a nine-story South Wing with four historic facades; and a connected 11-story office tower. The property owner, Beacon Capital Partners, a leading office investor and manager that specializes in enhancing historic properties, tasked ESI Design with creating a more harmonious interior and a contemporary, exciting work destination.

The building was treated as a single media canvas with a large 1700-square-foot motion-activated digital mural, new furnishings and lobby desk, and refined environmental graphics, including building ID, wayfinding, and visual identity.

For the upcoming winter season, Terrell Place will be debuting new Instagram-worthy lobby art on the media installations, including leaves that drift to the ground, icicles that grow, and snowfall that accelerates as visitors walk by.

Take a look at the installation, and hear the design thinking and cutting-edge technology behind it, in this site tour led by Michael Schneider, the project’s design lead from ESI Design, the New York City-based experience design firm.
