National Mall Signage and Wayfinding

With All Due Respect

A new signage and wayfinding program for the National Mall informs and guides visitors, but treads lightly.

When Pierre L’Enfant envisioned a “Grand Avenue” that would serve as the central axis and monumental core of the District of Columbia, he dreamt of ceremonial spaces and a tree-lined boulevard "…four hundred feet in breadth, and about a mile in length, bordered by gardens, ending in a slope from the houses on each side..."

Wendy Olmstead

Wendy Olmstead was a Faculty Associate at Tempe University's Industrial Design Program from 1980 - 1991.

Wendy Olmstead taught all levels of typography and graphic design to sophomore, junior and senior level students at Purdue University from 1991-1997. She also designed and directed seminar courses for graduate visual communications students and directed the efforts of independent study students upon their request.

Jim joined JRC Design in 1999 coming from the inter-disciplinary design firm of Cornoyer Hedrick Architects - one of the most respected firms in Arizona. From this background in architectural discipline, processes and drawing standards, Jim leads the team in producing concise design intent phases and drawings of the projects –ensuring the documents throughout all phases of the project are thoroughly and accurately documented for bidding and fabrication.

Ronald Shakespear: Making the City Legible

Ronald Shakespear has described his profession as “making the city legible.” With his sons Lorenzo and Juan and daughter Barbara, his design consultancy Diseño Shakespear has completed numerous wayfinding, branding, and design mega-projects in Buenos Aires, from the city’s underground to its hospitals and zoo.
