Understory at Amazon Spheres

The Spheres is the latest addition to Amazon’s downtown Seattle headquarters, and offers employees a work environment shared with over 40,000 plants, bringing them closer to nature as they work.

To explain this groundbreaking new building, Amazon established a free, public visitor center at The Spheres, called Understory. The name refers to the lush habitat between the rainforest floor and canopy and provides a fully immersive, 360-degree experience where visitors can get up close and personal with the science, engineering and plants behind The Spheres.

222 Java Corners

In response to this tech company’s increasing need for flexibility and personality within their workspaces, the design team developed a strategy for this unique campus that could evolve with its users as business units changed and the workplace evolved. Exploring advertising billboards as inspiration, the team developed a structural vocabulary with abstracted trusses to create broad and continuous surfaces along primary circulation axes. The billboard as metaphor pays tribute to the client as the pioneering force in online advertising.

OFFF Festival

OFFF (Open Flash Film Festival) is a rebrand of an existing film festival in Barcelona. The logo captures the essence of a stage, with the flexibility to expand as a graphic behavior based on different environments and media. This year’s festival theme is inspired by the Suprematism movement. It mimics the geometric aesthetics that originated from paintings created by Kazimir Malevich in the twenties.

Truett's Chick-fil-A

Truett's Chick-fil-A is a is a casual, family-friendly restaurant serving a southern-inspired menu of breakfast, lunch and dinner; it also acts as a lab to create new menu items, service models and guest experiences. Truett's has a drive-thru, a dining room with full waitress service, and a self-serve dining room with walk-up counter ordering, take-out and mobile pick-up. This mix of ways to get Chick-fil-A are reflective of Truett’s vision: "Three meals a day at Chick-fil-A."

Silesia Museum Wayfinding

The new location of the Silesian Museum, one of the biggest museum investments in Poland, is above the former Katowice coal mine. The main part of the architectural structure is a seven-story building, of which four floors are below ground. All spaces of the Silesian Museum are full of light, spacious and modern but, for some reason, these factors can lead to a feeling of getting lost.

BRUTAL: Views from Brazil's Concrete Utopia

Graphic design student Tais Ghelli aimed to explore the boundaries of transmedia design with an exhibition on Brazilian Brutalist Architecture. Using the Cannibalist Manifesto—which guided much of the Brazilian modernist movement—as a starting point, Ghelli sought to create a language (and ultimately a space) that translated the tensions, vitality and boldness of the works produced during this period.

The Fume Scent Lounge is a new experiential retail concept providing customers with a new multi-sensory way of experiencing fragrance. With the goal of attracting the new generation of millennials, the lounge integrates sight, sound, touch and smell, and elevates the fragrance shopping experience back to an art form in a very modern way.

MADBALLBALL

The design team partnered with the Museum of Arts and Design (MAD) in New York to create the signature digital experience for the 60th annual Mad Ball gala, their most important fundraiser. To entertain guests that included design luminaries, museum board members and honorees such as Madeleine Albright, Jorge M. Pérez and Barnaba Fornasetti, the museum tasked the team with creating a memorable interactive experience that was, true to their mission, an innovative and unexpected celebration of design and the creative process.

The Julliard School

The Juilliard School is internationally renowned as a leader in performing arts education. Founded in 1905, The school offers undergraduate and graduate degrees in dance, drama and music. Located at Lincoln Center in New York City, Juilliard produces the highest caliber of actors, musicians and dancers in the world. Their mission is to provide the tools for gifted students to reach their fullest potential as leaders, artists and global citizens. There are more than 800 artists enrolled at Juilliard, where they appear in over 700 annual performances in the school’s five theaters.

The New San Francisco Museum of Modern Art: Identity and Placemaking

The building identification provides a visual presence for the museum within the surrounding cityscape. Large-scale exterior signage was added to the two main entrances not just to increase visibility of the entrances, but to provide a visual link between the faces of two architecturally distinctive buildings with entrances on different streets. A warm red logo was installed on the new white façade on Howard Street and a white logo was placed on the existing warm red brick façade on Third Street.
