Place or Advertising? The Supreme Court’s Decision

​​​​​​​On November 10, 2021, the US Supreme Court heard oral arguments on City of Austin v. Reagan Advertising to consider whether government regulation of billboards violates the First Amendment rights of advertising companies. In a 6-3 decision issued on April 21, the Court rejected Reagan Advertising’s argument and upheld the City of Austin’s right to regulate “off premise” signage.. In a follow-up to her opinion piece from November 2021, SEGD past Board President Paula Rees (Principal, Foreseer) provides analysis of the Court’s judgment.

Long time member Paula Rees wrote an article featured in Fortune Magazine titled "How this woman you’ve never heard of shaped our world", about a legendary female design educator and innovator Sarah Turnbull.

On November 10, 2021, the US Supreme Court will hear oral arguments in a case that has implications for the SEGD community. City of Austin v. Reagan Advertising considers whether regulation of billboards violates the First Amendment rights of advertising companies. SEGD past board president, Paula Rees (principal of Foreseer), provides some context behind the case and how its outcome is likely to affect all of us.

Pike & Rose is a mixed-use neighborhood North Bethesda, Maryland. It will occupy over 32 acres when complete, with buildings ranging up to 20 stories. It’s approximately $1.5 billion in new construction and replaces an old strip shopping center with huge parking lots, a great exercise in East coast density and reuse.
