Every three years, New Zealand councils redesign their long-term budgets. Residents can have a say on what councils propose and their feedback is both welcome and valuable. They wanted a fast and effective way to provoke a more diverse array of submissions on the Council’s Long-term Plan and increase engagement with younger generations.

Te Kaapuia o Te Waoku — The Discovery Garden

Located within the popular Wellington Botanic Gardens, Te Kaapuia o Te Waoku or, The Discovery Garden, is a living classroom, which connects people to plants. City life provides few opportunities to connect with nature and this new garden aims to help children and their families better understand how plants support us with food, fiber, medicine and construction materials. These ‘four pillars’ influenced the design of the garden, and formed the basis of its education program.

2020 SEGD Wayfinding + Placemaking NOW: Day 1 - Global Moderated Discussion

In response to the global crises currently underway, designers from Oceania and India will address what they are seeing in their home states, and what they are doing to help people feel safe, comfortable, confident, and welcome in public places. They will discuss best practices in signage, environments, digital platforms, icon making, and communication given new paradigms and behaviors. And, they will talk about the evolving market demand for experiences in urban centers, retail environments, health care facilities, and university settings.

Te Hauāuru Reserve — Westgate Town Park

Te Hauāuru Reserve, Westgate Town Park, is a recreational area for the growing township of Westgate designed to serve a growing residential community in Auckland, New Zealand. It connects people to place through layers of storytelling embedded into the form of the park.

This integrated green space has been developed in collaboration with local iwi (tribe) and takes its visual cues from the site’s location within the network of upper Waitematā (Auckland Harbour) inlets, streams, and the history of the kauri (native tree) forests that once covered the area.

Hobsonville Point Habitat Markers

Interventions that attract attention and reveal what might live there are connecting people to place at Hobsonville Point—a medium-density suburb designed with the infrastructure necessary to generate a socially successful and sustainable community. Without explanation or instruction, these architectural objects create a unique and memorable user experience. Solving the client’s desire for inhabitants of Hobsonville to come to know the natural community that they live among in addition to the human one.
