Inclusive Design

Rie Takeuchi

I’m a recent graduate from The University of Texas at Austin’s M.A. in Design focused on Health program. I come from a background in video production and love storytelling.

After struggling to find my way around hospitals and encountering signs in public spaces that weren’t inclusive, I developed a strong interest in designing experiences, particularly wayfinding systems and services.

May is Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month in the United States, and in honor and recognition, SEGD presents this essay by contributor Shayla Hufana, Senior Art Director at Cognizant (Seattle, WA), a member of SEGD’s Racial Justice Commission and Co-Chair of SEGD’s Seattle Chapter. In her piece, Shayla writes about a work of public art she created in Seattle and how she hopes to empower AAPI youth “to reach beyond what any stereotype says of their background, identity or culture" and to be whoever they want to be.

Here at SEGD we have been striving to do better to create inclusive programming and partnerships that provide impactful social education and inspire positive action toward a truly egalitarian society--and need the voices of the community to do so. To kick off the month, we would like to feature Beyond the Binary: Setting the Wayfinding Standard for Inclusive Restrooms. This topic, featured at our 2021 Wayfinding + Placemaking event, is an important one as we strive to make the world a more inclusive place. We look forward to celebrating Pride month with all of you!

SEGD strives to celebrate projects that inspire and improve the human experience, including those that reflect the narratives of traditionally underrepresented communities.
