Waiting for the Rain

Studio Rašić's land art installation at a Croatian sculpture park waits to receive the gifts of nature.

Dubrova Sculpture Park in Labin, Croatia, has been the site of the Mediterranean Sculpture Symposium since 1970. The symposium was established in part to celebrate the beauty of the white Istrian limestone indigenous to the region. Today, the park is home to more than 70 monumental outdoor sculptures, as well as a unique land art project called White Road, conceived by symposium founder Josip Diminić.

From Here to There

Massey University student Katie Bevin creates a typographic installation that combines ancient technology with new-age social networking.

For her capstone project in Massey University’s College of Creative Arts, graphic design student Katie Bevin was challenged to combine a rigorous research process with development of typography and a site-specific narrative.

The Pavilion of Knowledge of the Seas was one of the most emblematic exhibits during the ocean-themed 1998 Lisbon World Exposition. In 1999, Ciencia Viva (“Living Science”) moved its headquarters into the building and it became a permanent interactive science and technology museum called, more simply, the Pavilion of Knowledge (Pavilhão do Conhecimento).

Transparency is a big buzzword these days. Politicians and corporations, psychologists and members of the media all strive for it or, at the very least, toss around the word as some sort of ideal practice. But what does it really mean? And more importantly, what does it look like? Ironically, an example may be found in the type of place that prompted the large-scale application of this word in the first place: a financial institution.

Dream Cube: 2010 World Expo Shanghai Corporate Pavilion

ESI Design collaborated with the Shanghai corporate community and a group of world-renowned architects and artists to design the 40,000-sq.-ft. Dream Cube for the 2010 World Expo in Shanghai. The pavilion encouraged visitors to participate in a multimedia experience comprised of cutting-edge technology, dreamlike environments, collaborative social spaces, and sustainably designed materials.

The Forgotten Cities Hiking Trails run along three different routes in the area of Samaan (Simeon) Mountain, the Limestone Massif of North Syria to the west of Aleppo. More than 700 dead or forgotten cities containing archeological sites and rich cultural and natural heritage features are located along the 140-kilometer north/south trail that varies from 20 to 30 kilometers wide.

Macquarie Group, Australia’s largest investment bank, needed a comprehensive signage and graphics program for its new headquarters in Sydney. This forward-thinking bank values transparency, a global outlook, and collaborative work behavior, and sought to express those brand attributes in its physical space.

MAXXI, the Zaha Hadid-designed national museum of contemporary art in Rome, opened in May 2010. Hadid created a building characterized by sinuous and geometric shapes, volumes that separate from the main building to overlook the city, exposed cement, modulation of natural light, and the use of white in all its shades.

The MAXXI Foundation wanted the signage system to provide essential information in a clear, visible, but non-invasive way. Ma:design conceived the signage system to reflect the architectural concepts of using light/shadow, full/empty, and rigid/organic shapes.

The Pavilion of Knowledge in Lisbon is an interactive science and technology museum that aims to make science accessible to all. Through its exhibits and educational programs, its goals are to stimulate experimentation and exploration of the physical world.

Design firm P-06 Atelier (Lisbon) collaborated with project architects JLCG Architects to create an environmental “skin” for the museum’s multi-purpose foyer.

Urban Tales is a time-based, site-specific piece of environmental typography created by Katie Bevin, a student in the Graphic Design Program, College of Creative Arts at Massey University in Wellington, New Zealand.

For her final project in 2010, Bevin combined form with shadow to create a temporal typographic narrative in Wellington’s urban Waitangi Park.

For the Achievement First Endeavor Middle School, a Brooklyn charter school for grades 5 through 8, Pentagram created a program of environmental graphics that help the school interiors become a vibrant space for learning. The Pentagram team worked with Rogers Marvel Architects, which designed the school as a refurbishment and expansion of an existing building.

ASICS is the world’s third largest shoe company. Their new Sydney offices required a graphic overlay that captured the technical aspects that ASICS footwear and apparel are renowned for.

Working in collaboration with WMK Architecture, THERE Design (Sydney) was asked to highlight the company’s dual focus on movement and technology, providing a stimulating environment while reminding staff and visitors of the company’s core brand values.

For a financial services corporation’s headquarters overlooking Baltimore’s Inner Harbor, Ayers Saint Gross developed an environmental graphic design program that serves as a three-dimensional manifestation of its heritage and brand values.

Casa do Conto, located in an emerging neighborhood of Porto, Portugal, is a 19th century bourgeois home restored as a guesthouse. After suffering a fire only days before its inauguration in 2009, it underwent another restoration project to renew the interiors, including wooden ceilings and ornamental plaster moldings that had been destroyed.

This installation is a unique collaboration between art and business—two distinctly contrasting disciplines at the University of Washington. The School of Art, Division of Design was commissioned to develop a permanent installation for Paccar Hall, their new campus neighbor and the home of the UW Foster School of Business.

The new chapel at Sacred Heart University serves as a beacon for spiritual life on the campus in Fairfield, Conn. It has a striking presence on the university’s new main quadrangle, complementing the new library and Humanities Center.

Design Museum Holon is a major part of the city of Holon, Israel’s, efforts to transform itself into an epicenter of culture, arts, and education. Designed by Ron Arad Architects, the museum features an iconic, sinuous ribbon façade of Corten weathering steel.

Over the past several years, local environmentalists have worked hard to save Japhet Creek, part of the Buffalo Bayou waterway system that is Houston, Texas’ most significant natural resource. Japhet Creek had become a dumping ground, littered with tires, trash, plastic bottles, and rubble.

A result of six years of scholarship, the traveling exhibition Eero Saarinen: Shaping the Future is the first comprehensive show of Eero Saarinen’s work. The Museum of the City of New York was its sixth venue after the 2006 inaugural opening in Finland. The show includes black and white photography, presentation and working models, furniture, ephemera, animations, drawings, sketches, and blueprints. For this viewing, curators highlighted Saarinen’s connection to New York, and a fresh new identity was generated.

The Metro Crossing branch of the First National Bank in Council Bluffs, Iowa, is located directly off an interstate and nestled between river casinos and strip malls. With its architecture and environmental graphics that embrace Iowa’s natural prairie history, RDG Planning & Design sought to strike a balance with the surrounding commercial area.

The Industrial Design Society of America’s 2010 conference, themed “Do It Yourself,” was held in Portland, Ore. Tasked with creating environmental graphics for the event, industrial design firm Ziba Design (Portland) was up against an almost nonexistent budget ($4,000), an uninspiring venue (a traditional Hilton hotel), and a client with a reputation for fragmented conferences with poor theming and environmental design.
