Delmore “Buddy” Daye Learning Institute Office

This project started with the notion of the Delmore “Buddy” Daye Learning Institute as the collectors and distributors of knowledge related to African ancestry in Nova Scotia. Ghanaian Adinkra symbols are essential in that culture to express ideas. From architecture to signage, from material to finish, the Adinkra woodcuts—used to print on storytelling cloth—informed the architectural and placemaking work.

At 9:04 am, on December 6, 1917, Halifax weathered a devastating explosion. A wartime city (equilibrium) endured a devastating explosion (disruption), is rescued and re-imagined (resolution) and rose anew (new equilibrium). From an experiential graphic design perspective, this project presented an opportunity to explore notions of the narrative.

Earlier in the day, I was asked to submit images from my sketchbook. I thought: How did they know sketchbooks mean so much to me? Did I say something? Perhaps it was an uncanny coincidence. Only hours earlier I remarked on a student’s sketchbook and their progress exploring and collecting ideas. Maybe it was leaving the house sans keys and wallet, yet with sketchbook in hand?

As sesquicentennial celebrations unfold, it is important not to overlook Canada’s pre-Confederation and first nations heritage. This experiential design undertaking is aimed at strengthening ties between the Canadian Government and the Métis Nation—Saskatchewan. At the heart of this history is a land dispute, the source of inspiration for Form Media’s core concept. Our parti focuses on two opposing methods of landholding: a thoughtful linear and river-oriented allotment by a semi-nomadic turned agrarian people versus an unnatural grid-based system imposed on one nation by another.
