BIPOC Directors Collective: Amplifying and Strengthening the BIPOC Creative Community

During the summer of 2020, in the aftermath of George Floyd’s murder, SEGD members Aki Carpenter (Ralph Appelbaum Associates, New York) and Inessah Selditz (Ada, New York) formed BIPOC Directors Collective (BIPOC-DC), a group of directors and leaders of color to enact real change from the top down. Since then, the BIPOC-DC has hosted virtual talks and conferences to discuss issues and actions, as well as provide role models and mentorship for younger people of color who are rising-up within the creative industries.

SEGD’s 2021 Exhibition + Experience event culminates on Thursday afternoon, August 5, with a keynote presentation by L’Rai Arthur-Mensa (Local Projects, New York, NY) and Phillip Keith Armstrong (Greenwood Rising, Tulsa, OK). Their presentation celebrates the official opening of the new Greenwood Rising Black Wall Street History Center this month in Tulsa, which tells the story of the Greenwood District and the resiliency of it’s community.

Throughout August 2020, SEGD members participated in the organization’s annual Exhibition + Experience event. Titled “How Soon Is Now? Designing Change,” the symposium responded to the tumultuous events of that year. In 1994, Chicago’s Museum of Science and Industry opened “Take Flight,” one of their most popular exhibits featuring the fuselage of a retired Boeing 727 passenger plane. Visiting distilleries has gained in popularity over the past 15 years, and consumers want to know more about the process—whether at small-batch craft distilleries or large-batch commercial distilleries—and taste the results! SEGD looks at member firms who have designed “distillery experiences” to cultivate a greater public knowledge of the science and art of distilling.
