2017 SEGD Fellow and Achievement Award Winners Announced

MIAMI — During the 2017 SEGD Conference Experience Miami, winners of the 2017 SEGD Achievement Awards were announced and celebrated among the largest annual gathering of members of the experiential graphic design community. Since 1987, has honored the individuals, companies, and institutions whose work has significantly advanced the environmental and experiential graphic design fields. The 2017 honorees and awards are as follows.

Since 1987, has honored the individuals, companies, and institutions whose work has significantly advanced the environmental and experiential graphic design fields.

Alex Wood, Partner Holmes Wood
Alex Wood

Alex Wood, Wayfinding Director, started working life on the shop floor of one of the UK’s leading sign companies, Wood and Wood, learning how signs are made. She eventually became their Commercial Director responsible for implementing sign schemes for many clients including Canary Wharf and the Royal Parks. Alex then decided to set up a design company specifically to work independently with clients to help create, design and implement successful wayfinding, sign design and information graphic solutions.

Lucy Holmes, Creative Director of Holmes Wood, graduated with honors from the Rhode Island School of Design. She joined Pentagram Design in 1991 and spent four years working as part of David Hillman’s team.

Kelly Kolar

2017 SEGD Distinguished Member, Past Board member of SEGD (2004-2011), President of Kolar Design

Kelly Kolar is president, founder and chief creative officer at Kolar Design. Founding Kolar Design in 1990, Kelly Kolar set herself apart as a creative talent, using her love of design and understanding of the human element to transform built environments. The firm creates impactful, branded experience at the intersection of people and place. 

Teresa Cox, APCO Signs
Teresa Cox

2015 SEGD Distinguished Member, Teresa Cox was a board member of SEGD from 2010 - 2012.

Responsible for US sales of interior and exterior sign systems, directories, displays and related products at APCO Graphics (previously APCO Sign Systems). Teresa has been with APCO Graphics since 1982 and in her role as President, she leads a team of 21 salespeople, located throughout the US.

Teresa Cox studied at the University of California, Santa Cruz.

Cybelle Jones, Gallagher & Associates
Cybelle Jones

2014 SEGD Distinguished Member, Cybelle Jones was an SEGD Board member from 2006-2012.

Cybelle Jones is Principal and Studio Director of Gallagher & Associates. Her creative direction and leadership has been integral to the success of the firm and to our position as one of the leading professional design firms. Cybelle graduated from the University of Cincinnati with a BFA in Architecture and Planning. She is an Adjunct Professor at the Corcoran College of Art + Design and has lead the Design Improv with David Vanden-Eynden for a number of years.

Thomas Esch

2011 Distinguished Member Award honoree

Tom Esch, senior civil engineer at Norman Y. Mineta San Jose International Airport, was recognized for his innovative work in developing SEGD's Airport and Transportation Workshop; encouraging collaboration among EGD firms, fabricators, manufacturers, and airport executives; and organizing the Airport Sign Managers Network to promote best practices in airport wayfinding systems.

Nancy Daneils
Nancy Daniels

1998 Distinguished Member Award honoree

Nancy Daniels has been fascinated and challenged by the intersection of informal learning and technology for almost ten years. Whether it's online activities, environments or mobile apps, Nancy Daniels focuses on how to integrate media and technology effectively, meaningfully and beautifully. Mobile has blown up the potential of creating incredibly powerful experiences-- for collaboration, productivity and fun.

Tom Donnelly

Innovating at the intersection of Design, Wayfinding, Branding and Place.

Scott Drummond
Scott Drummond

1994 Distinguished Member Award honoree

Scott Drummond is a Brand and Design Creative Strategist. He is a specialist in Sports, Entertainment, Hotel and Restaurant brands. Scott Drummond is skilled at building out teams—currently for Prophet, previously for Landor and a newly created boutique agency Forty Forty.

Wendy Olmstead
Wendy Olmstead

1993 Distinguished Member Award honoree

Wendy Olmstead was a Faculty Associate at Tempe University's Industrial Design Program from 1980 - 1991.

Wendy Olmstead taught all levels of typography and graphic design to sophomore, junior and senior level students at Purdue University from 1991-1997. She also designed and directed seminar courses for graduate visual communications students and directed the efforts of independent study students upon their request.

Juanita Dugdale
Juanita Dugdale

1998 Angel Award honoree and 1994 Distinguished Member Award honoree

Although Juanita is trained in graphic design, her practice shifted more towards journalism and writing in the 1990s. She reports on art, design and cultural issues to several publications and also serves as a contributing editor of Interiors magazine.

Danny Schneider
Danny Schneider

2009 SEGD Green Committee Distinguished Member Award honoree. Danny Schneider was recently with Vista System, and is an active member of the sign industry and a green enthusiast.

Harry Spetnagel
Harry Spetnagel

2009 SEGD Green Committee Distinguished Member Award honoree. Harry Spetnagel is an Associate Design Director in Gensler’s Denver office. He joined Gensler in 2006 with more than 15 years experience in sign design and fabrication.

John Souter
John Souter

2009 SEGD Green Committee Distinguished Member Award honoree

John Souter, PhD, is Director of Operations for Accent Signage Systems, a high-tech wholesale fabricator of interior ADA signage. John joined Accent in 2005 after almost 20 years with 3M, where he was responsible for research and development in color science and digital imaging, working in Europe, Asia, and the United States.

2009 SEGD Green Committee Distinguished Member Award honoree

Mike is Director of Sales and Product Development for Nova Polymers, Inc, a manufacturer and distributor of architectural signage materials. Mike is responsible for the development, distribution and sales of the products Nova brings to the architectural sign market. He has spent the past several years building relationships with key product manufactures, fabricators and architectural designers to develop environmentally responsible materials and business practices. - See more at Nova Polymers.

Craig Johnson has provided the creative design and direction for more than 40 award winning interactive multimedia programs, videos and films. These efforts have focused on the successful application of innovative media technology and compelling stories about watersheds, the environment, cultural heritage and Anthropology.

Thomas Horton, Senior Associate at Gensler, serves as the firm’s environmental graphic design director in the San Francisco Brand Design Studio.
