Allen’s Landing, where Buffalo Bayou meets the heart of downtown, is the birthplace of Houston. Flowing west from this historic landing, Buffalo Bayou Park was successfully revitalized in 2010. Now the focus is along the bayou’s east sector. This section has a distinctly different character from the west and downtown; flowing through historically Hispanic and African American communities and through the industrial zones of the Houston Ship Channel.
EGD is a valuable tool for beginning graphic design students to gain awareness of the direct relationship between design and place/community. Two of our lower level seminars, Art of Walking and Text in the Landscape, aim to achieve this.
Written Wor(l)ds was part of Creative Mapping, a special topics course that brought together University of Houston MFA/BFA Graphic Design, School of Art and MFA/PhD Creative Writing, Department of English. The Written Wor(l)ds exhibition set out to represent both the words and the worlds of selected literary texts.
Architecture and graphic design students at the University of Houston collaborated with a steel manufacturer and a local park to create a micro-pavilion to house a sound art installation. The project demonstrated the potential use of office cubicle waste for disaster relief housing.
