Airport Wayfinding: Guiding Passengers and Expressing Identity

Airport Wayfinding: Guiding Passengers and Expressing Identity

Read Time: 3 minutes
When navigating through airports, travelers want to quickly find their gate—or baggage area or exit—and then be off! In their new book, Airport Wayfinding, SEGD members Heike Nehl and Sibylle Schlaich reveal how designers of wayfinding signage help passengers navigate the complexities of modern airports, and in the process, help reduce their stress. Along the way, the authors also explore how airport graphics express the identities of place, culture, and even the spirit of flight.

VEAG Media Facade

Honor Award
VEAG Media Facade, PLEX GmbH

In visual communications, architecture and the architectural environment are increasingly important parts of corporate identity. In this way, the façade of the VEAG (Vereinigte Energiewerke AG) administration building has become a message. The VEAG building signals openness and farsightedness – this building is on the move! Eighteen windows are fitted with Priva-Lite glass panes. Pressing a button makes them opaque or completely transparent. The panes are back-projection screens. Digital projectors in the building screen five-story-high dynamic film by internationally acclaimed artists.

Neue Nationalgalerie

Merit Award
Neue Nationalgalerie, Jenny Holzer, Sunrise Systems

Like much of her work, Jenny Holzer's installation at the Berlin Neue Nationalgalerie was site-specific, made especially for a specific space and designed to last a particular length of time. However, this exhibition has become a permanent part of Berlin's new national gallery due to its success and Holzer's thoughtful response to the building's architecture.
