SEGD Exhibition & Experience Design Workshop

August 21-22 in Washington, D.C.

Today, exhibition design is a convergent discipline that borrows elements from retail store design, interpretive wayfinding, storytelling, media, and interaction design. The creatives who develop immersive, compelling exhibition experiences are just as diverse, hailing from the experience design world as well as web development, technology, science, typography, and brand design.

Wayne LaBar has twenty five years of experience in museum, and science center planning, project management, creative team leadership, experience and exhibition design and development, implementation, exhibition technology and networking. Current interests are leading organizations to have a greater impact on their communities, developing innovative and new exhibition and public programming, experimenting and advancing the experience and museum field with new paradigms that are shaping our society's means of communicating, and working together.

Alchemy Studio

Alchemy Studio (Maplewood, N.J.) began work with the Municipality of Kayseri in central Turkey on the planned Kayseri Science Center, specifically on the master planning and building programming. The Kayseri team is a partnership between the TUBITAK, the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey, and Kayseri Municipality, all working to bring the first science center to this part of the country. The building is being designed by the Istanbul-based Untitled Studio.

Alchemy Studio

Alchemy Studio (Maplewood, N.J.) recently began work on the preliminary building and exhibition planning for the new science center in Saudia Arabia. The Al-Qassim Science Center will be located in the Al-Qassim Province in the city of Buraydah.

The firm will help plan the layout of visitor spaces and exhibition areas and will also work on early designs for the exhibitions. Eventually work will include overseeing fabrication and installation.

Alchemy Studio

Alchemy Studio (Maplewood, N.J.) Principal Wayne LaBar spoke at two recent symposia held by countries focused on expanding their cultural offerings. On May 26 LaBar was keynote speaker at the Turkey Science Center Symposium in Bursa, Turkey. On June 6, he addressed museum leaders in Doha, Qatar, focusing his talk on interactive and technology aspects of exhibits. 

The studio has also begun early schematic design and visioning for the Children’s Science Center in Virginia.

Alchemy Studio

Alchemy Studio (Maplewood, N.J.) has been established by Wayne LaBar, former vice president of exhibitions and featured experiences at Liberty Science Center and principal of its LSC Experience Services.

The independent development, design, and consulting studio will work with science centers, museums, government agencies, NGOs, filmmakers, and others involved in the public engagement of science, history, technology, and the humanities.
