Defining Museums: Five Essays by SEGD Members

What exactly is a museum? This is the question that the International Council of Museums (ICOM) is asking its 45,000 members. As a worldwide organization of museum professionals, ICOM plays an important role in supporting professional networks, establishing museum standards, promoting cultural heritage, and raising public awareness of museum missions.

Currently, ICOM is working to create a formal definition of “museum”—a highly controversial topic. The list of potential definitions has been narrowed to five, and a vote will determine the final definition.

The following five essays represent the opinions of SEGD members on the pros and cons of ICOM’s proposed definitions.

Now open to the public Ford House has a brand new 40,000 square foot Visitor Center. The new facility accompanies the 1920s historic mansion and other buildings on the 87-acre estate. Full-service experience design agency, Luci Creative, led the interpretive planning and exhibit design for the project, in partnership with Richard Lewis Media Group. Other project partners and contributors included architect SmithGroup, general contractor Frank Rewold and Son Inc., custom fabricator Ravenswood Studio, Inc., and A/V specialist Creative Technology.

Saint Louis Science Center Hosts Apollo 11 Exhibit

"Destination Moon: The Apollo 11 Mission" is a celebratory 50th anniversary exhibition of the Apollo 11 mission, organized by the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service, that is traveling to top museums across America. Beginning on April 14 and running through September 3, the Saint Louis Science Center became the only museum in the Midwest to host this very special exhibition.
