Together, Apart—Checking in with the SEGD Community

"May you live in interesting times," goes the ubiquitous phrase (curse?) of dubious origin—and here we are, strangely both closer together, and farther apart than ever before. But designers and fabricators dig a challenge, right? The SEGD community is a truly special group of people from around the globe—bound together by their warm collegial comportment, and love of design excellence and shared experiences—who continue to find creative ways to connect, inspire and help others across their teams and across the globe.

At 9:04 am, on December 6, 1917, Halifax weathered a devastating explosion. A wartime city (equilibrium) endured a devastating explosion (disruption), is rescued and re-imagined (resolution) and rose anew (new equilibrium). From an experiential graphic design perspective, this project presented an opportunity to explore notions of the narrative.

As sesquicentennial celebrations unfold, it is important not to overlook Canada’s pre-Confederation and first nations heritage. This experiential design undertaking is aimed at strengthening ties between the Canadian Government and the Métis Nation—Saskatchewan. At the heart of this history is a land dispute, the source of inspiration for Form Media’s core concept. Our parti focuses on two opposing methods of landholding: a thoughtful linear and river-oriented allotment by a semi-nomadic turned agrarian people versus an unnatural grid-based system imposed on one nation by another.
