Placemaking is the creation of a communal space that embraces local community's assets, inspiration, and potential. Placemaking is a process as well as a philosophy. It is a multi-faceted approach to the planning, design and management of public spaces. 

Join us to hear relevant industry speakers discuss their areas of expertise in relation to the creation of places in varying context.

Event Speakers:

Tara O'Neil  |  xylem+loom
Tara O’Neil is a designer, strategist, and foresighter at xylem+loom, a retail innovation firm based in Toronto. She was formerly a VP of Retail Strategy & Design at Figure3. Prior to this role, Tara was Chief Creative Officer at Perennial Inc. With more than 20 years in the industry, Tara has worked on everything from grocery to courier services, from 100,000 sq. ft. stores to kiosks and for multi billion dollar corporations and one- man entrepreneurs. Tara provides her clients with experience, knowledge, insights and ideas as they relate the complex realities of modern retailing. She makes complicated things simple. She knows retail.

Tim Kocur  |  Toronto Financial District BIA
Tim Kocur is Communications Manager for the Toronto Financial District BIA, an organization that advocates on behalf of businesses in its office towers and PATH underground walkway on priority issues, improves public spaces, and promotes daily business activity online. Tim’s background has found him preparing communications for everyone from pre-schoolers to senior executives and in areas as varied as metal fabrication and art gallery management.

Natasha Mytnowych  |  Artscape Youngplace & Artscape Sandbox
Natasha Mytnowych is the inaugural Managing Director of Artscape Youngplace, and is responsible for the overall management and implementation of the vision of this vibrant new cultural centre located at Queen Street West and Shaw Street. The facility is the largest cultural institution in West Queen West and Artscape’s fourth building in the neighbourhood. Artscape Youngplace serves as an anchor for arts and the community in West Queen West, one of the country’s most creative neighbourhoods.

Udo Schliemann  |  Entro Communications
Udo has over 30 years of experience in corporate design and signage programs. A native of Germany, Udo was Studio Manager for one of Germany’s leading design firms, Stankowski + Duschek in Stuttgart. There, he developed corporate identity programs for the German Stock Exchange in Frankfurt, the development for Germany’s bid for the Winter Olympics ’92 and Leica Cameras.
In 1999, he immigrated with his family to Canada where he started at Gottschalk+Ash International. In 2011 he joined Entro Communications as Principal Creative Director. The last 4 years his work has focused on integrated wayfinding systems and branded environments for clients such as Artscape, RBC, Rotman, SickKids, Daniels Spectrum and the Weston Family Learning Centre.
