Sian Kelly is a founder director of The Velvet Principle, a London based wayfinding consultancy who's mission is to empower people by improving the legibility of the places they visit and spend time in.
A biochemistry graduate, Sian has over 20 years experience in marketing and strategy development. She started her career on the client side working for Coca-Cola and Schweppes before moving into the technology sector. Firstly for The National Physical Laboratory, the UK’s national standards laboratory.
More latterly she was the lead technologist for the creative industries within Innovate UK (the UK’s innovation agency). Here she was responsible for developing and implementing the UK’s strategy to stimulate innovation and growth within the UK’s creative and digital media businesses. She continues to remain involved and fascinated by innovations in the digital sector.
Sian Kelly transitioned from a buyer of design services, to a supplier in 2010, co- founding The Velvet Principle, with experienced wayfinder Sean Brereton. Her main contribution is in the research and strategy development stages of projects. With clients increasingly looking for digital solutions, she also gets to use her experience of working at the cutting edge of digital.
Since formation, The Velvet Principle has worked on high profile commercial developments across the world. Within the UK projects have included award winning shopping malls One New Change, London; Trinity Leeds and The Lexicon, Bracknell.
Sian Kelly is currently the Chair of The Sign Design Society; the UK based professional association for those involved in all aspects of wayfinding and sign design
