The Bacteria and the Virus: Navigating Healthcare Design

In the past year, SEGD Fellow David Gibson has had two personal experiences with deadly infection. In the fall of 2019, he was attacked by a fast moving strep infection and sepsis, in the spring of 2020, he was infected with the Coronavirus. He survived both and gained personal insight into navigating the dynamics of healthcare as a chronic patient.

David Gibson has 50 years experience as a designer. He has created wayfinding systems for some of the country’s most prominent healthcare institutions, including Boston Children’s Hospital, Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, The Johns Hopkins Hospital, Mount Sinai Medical Center, and Massachusetts General Hospital.

From both sides of the navigational lens, David will share his formula for driving patient-centered wayfinding in healthcare. He will discuss the design tools that make for effective navigation in stressful environments, the institutional will that must drive innovation, and the benefits of a wayfinding system that improves the patient experience.
