Publicis-owned Second Story—the experience design studio known for its breadth of interactive placemaking—has a new creative lead.
Joel Krieger was elevated to chief creative officer following nearly seven years with the company. He joined in 2013, co-founding Second Story's Atlanta location and serving as creative director and then executive creative director for all three locations (New York, Atlanta and Portland). Krieger will now be responsible for steering the studio’s creative, business and technology vision.
“We are uniquely primed to lead the way in digitally augmented spaces,” says Krieger. “Second Story has a long history designing between culture and commerce and has been exploring the convergence of physical and digital for more than 20 years. I’m beyond excited to push forward in this new era of environmental design by combining experience, storytelling and technology to make spaces that defy labels.”
Krieger has played a key role in leading the company’s award-winning projects. Most recently, he spearheaded Ecoterica, an immersive installation for Epson that reconnects people to nature. He also launched Unify (a generative artwork created on the world's largest 4K LED display for Legacy Union) and guided the team behind the forthcoming Australian Center for the Moving Image, which opens in Melbourne in the summer of 2020.
“Interactive environments are beginning to go mainstream, and brand investments are continuing to move from advertising to experiences that happen in the physical world,” says Krieger. “As more people crave the joy of being together in the real world, the value of placemaking will become paramount. Second Story will help to accelerate this shift by creating real-world experiences in service of human connection and collaboration.”
Krieger will continue to be based out of Atlanta, leading the teams across the country.
