Roto was created in 2004 for the express purpose of bringing together the best custom interactive experiences throughout the built environment – not only in the traditional institutional settings of museums, aquariums and libraries, but in the growing array of applications across numerous architecturally-oriented disciplines, including sports arenas, airports, flagship retail, corporate headquarters, and brand destinations. Wherever big ideas, critical messaging, or original customer engagement require a unique and custom solution, Roto’s particular integration of strategy, design, and turnkey production accountability have been in exponential demand.
Roto has grown annually over the last 16 years to become one of the largest custom, technology-oriented design-build firms in North America, operating multiple interdisciplinary studios from its 60,000 ft2 state-of-the-art facility in Dublin, Ohio, a satellite offices in Boston, New York, Chicago and Charlotte. Two versatile experience design studios focused on institutional projects are supplemented by an immersive and interactive media studio, an aquarium and living collection design studio, a unique-in-the-industry custom electronics and a/v studio, and a full-service fabrication and installation shop, collectively producing and installing more than $20M annually in custom features, attractions and exhibits across North America and around the world.
As a result of its depth and versatility, Roto enjoys an exceptionally diverse client mix, from architecture firms and developers, to major brands and agencies, to public and private non-profit entities for projects like libraries, aquariums, zoos and museums. Known as “interactive experts “without limitation, Roto is breaking new ground with highly engaging techniques for AR/VR applications, immersive media art installations, a wide range of gesture-controlled media interactives, and an advanced capability for blending technology with physical environments, objects, and displays. In just the last 18 months, Roto has delivered digitally-illuminated ball machines 10 meters tall, giant interactive data displays built of thousands of water bottles, and mixed-media immersive projections of fire and stars telling thousand-year-old stories of the origin of the heavens. It has designed enormous cutting-edge aquarium exhibits, quirky outdoor play structures, and a 14,000 ft2 architectural ceiling made of 3,000 illuminated hexagons driven by the raw flow of internet data. It has created a butterfly garden in Kuwait, a bespoke playroom in New York, a war memorial in Wyoming, and a fantasy spaceship in Denver.
Importantly, each of these installed projects were designed and engineered by Roto, consistent with the company’s philosophy of providing highly-reliable, single-source of accountability, offering design collaborators and owners the best of both creative authorship and expert technical delivery. The company continues to innovate internally and externally, offering ever-expanding access to new technology and leading-edge solutions through our exposure to the best-of-the-best design thinkers in their respective sectors.
